The changes were that at first this holiday was introduced in 1994, as a way to heal the problems between the people of South Africa. This was done because prior to this the nation had been undergoing injustice.

Later, after the democratic elections in 1994, this was included in the post Apartheid South Africa.

on 16 DEC 1995, this name was changed to " Day of Reconciliation" and was celebrated as a public holiday instead. This was done to ensure that a calm was kept between a " struggling past" and " promoting of national unity in new political circumstances"

African people saw this as a way of peaceful protest against injustice.
