Binding energy is the energy required to remove a nucleon from the nucleus of the atom. Nucleons are protons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons have more mass outside the nucleus than they do inside the nucleus. The amount of mass they lose, called the mass-defect, turns into the energy that binds the nucleus together.
