Sound can be characterized by the following three quantities:
1.Pitch:The sound of pitch goes up and down also it is the frequency of a sound as perceived by human ear.
2.Quality:Tone is used to measure the quality of sound.
3.Dynamics (loudness or softness):A sound determines its volume (loud volume or low volume).
Soft music:Soft, fine, light, smooth.
Hard rock music:In this type of music heavy vocals are used like drum,electric guitar etc.

A sound has mainly three characteristics ---
1) LOUDNESS ----
It is the measure of sound energy reaching ear per second. The loudness of sound depends upon the amplitude of vibrations of a sound wave.If sound waves have small amplitude then sound will be faint and if the waves have large amplitude then the sound will be loud.The loudness of sound is measured in decibel (dB).

2) PITCH -----
How are we able to distinguish a man's voice from that of a woman's?
It is due to pitch.
It is the characteristic of sound by which we can distinguish between sounds of equal loudness. Pitch depends on frequency. Frequency is number of vibrations per second. Greater the frequency of a sound, higher is the pitch. Faster the vibrations of a sound source, higher is the frequency, hence higher is the pitch.

3) QUALITY OR TIMBRE -----
How do we know sound is coming from sitar without seeing it being played?
It is possible due to another property of sound quality or timbre.
The characteristic of sound which enables us to distinguish between sounds of same pitch and loudness is called quality or timbre. A sound is said to be of rich quality when the sound is pleasant.
Sound produced by musical instruments like flute, tabla, sitar, drum, etc can be and sound produced by singers can be distinguished due to their quality or timbre.
