The term chlor-alkali refers to the two chemicals (chlorine and an alkali) which are simultaneously produced as a result of the electrolysis of a saltwater. The most common chlor-alkali chemicals are chlorine and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) but can include potassium hydroxide and muriatic acid.

Electrolysis of Brine
When electricity is passed through aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) also known as brine solution, it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This process is called cholr-alkali process because of products formed chlor from chlorine and alkali from sodium hydroxide. Chlorine is given at anode and hydrogen at cathode, sodium hydroxide near cathode.
