The Mauryan Empire was formed by Chandragupta Maurya with the help of Chanakya. It extended to the period from 322 BCE to 185 BCE, it was one of the most important empires of the ancient India. We get to know about the Mauryan administration through various sources. The most important among them is the Arthasashtra written by Chanakya, and Indica written by Megasthenese.

  • Megasthenese mentioned in Indica that the Mauryan society was divided into 7 classes, they were Philosophers, Farmers, Soldiers, Herdsmen, Artisans, Magistrates and Councillors.
  • However, the basis of this classification was economical rather than social.
