The Mauryan Empire was formed by Chandragupta Maurya with the help of Chanakya. It extended to the period from 322 BCE to 185 BCE, it was one of the most important empires of the ancient India. We get to know about the Mauryan administration through various sources. The most important among them is the Arthasashtra written by Chanakya, and Indica written by Megasthenese.

- Megasthenese mentioned in Indica that the Mauryan society was divided into 7 classes, they were Philosophers, Farmers, Soldiers, Herdsmen, Artisans, Magistrates and Councillors.
- However, the basis of this classification was economical rather than social.
- While Arthasashtra written by Chanakya suggests that the Mauryan society was divided into 4 Varnas. ( Chaturvarna)
- Other important features included, that women were given high status, married women did have their own bride gift, ( Stree dhana) and widows were treated with respect.
- Education system was prevalent and most of the teaching centres was Buddhist monasteries.
- Brahmins continued to hold higher positions and most of the education was imparted by them.
- Joint family structure was present.
