The classification of organic compounds with an example is explained below:

There are two major groups of organic compounds-

  1. Acyclic or Open chain compounds (Aliphatic compounds)
  2. Cyclic or Close chain compounds

Cyclic compounds are of two types-

  • Heterocyclic compounds (Example- Aniline)
  • Homocyclic compounds (Example- Cyclopropane)

Homocyclic compounds again are of two types-

  • Alicyclic compounds
  • Aromatic compounds

Aromatic compounds can be benzenoid compounds (Example- Benzene) or non-benzenoid compounds (Example- Tropolone).

Aliphatic compounds are classified further on the basis of functional group as follows-

  • Alkane (Example- Methane)
  • Alkene (Example- Ethene)
  • Alkyne (Example- Ethyne)
  • Halide (Example- 1-Bromobutane)
  • Alcohol (Example- Ethanol)
  • Aldehyde (Example- Formaldehyde)
  • Ketone (Example- Acetone)
  • Nitrile (Example- Propyl cyanide)
  • Ether (Example- Methyl ethyl ether)
  • Carboxylic acid (Example- Acetic acid)
  • Ester (Example- Ethyl ethanoate)
  • Amine (Example- Trimethylamine)
  • Amide (Example- Acetamide)
