RESOURCES - DEFINITION

Everything available in our environment which can be used to satisfy our needs, provided, it is technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable can be termed as Resource.

  • RESOURCES ON THE BASIS OF ORIGIN

Based on their origin, resources can be abiotic or biotic. Abiotic resources are non-living while biotic resources are living. Soils, rocks and minerals are abiotic but plants and animals are biotic resources.

  • RESOURCES ON THE BASIS OF EXHAUSTIBILTY

On the Basis of exhaustibility, resources can be renewable or non-renewable.

Renewable resources are those which get renewed or replenished quickly.

Non-renewable resources are those which have a limited stock.

  • RESOURCES ON THE BASIS OF OWNERSHIP

On the Basis of ownership, resources can be individual resources or community owned resources.

Individual Resources: These are also owned privately by individuals.

Community Owned Resources: There are resources which are accessible to all the members of the community.

  • RESOURCES ON THE BASIS OF DEVELOPMENT

On the basis of their development and use resources can be classified into two groups, actual resources and potential resources.

Actual resources are those resources whose quantity is known.

Potential resources are those whose entire quantity may not be known and these are not being used at present.
