during soap mixes water micells are formed which consists of two ends hydrophillic end and hydrophobic end hydrophillic end mixes with water to form scum and hydrophobic end mixes with dirt and grease thus cleaning clothes

when soap is dissolved in water the soap molecule alignes itself in such a manner that the ionic part is attracted towards the water and hydrocarbon part is attracted towards the oil/dirt/grease and forms a structure around the oil called micelle. Hence an emulsion is formed. The micelle thus lifts the oil and forms an insoluble solution
