When number of resistors connected end to end then they are said to be in series.

From the law of conservation of ᴇɴᴇʀɢɪᴇꜱ

V =V _{1} +V _{2} +V _{3}

From Ohm's law,

V=I R _{1} , V=I R _{2} ,V=I R _{3} \\ ᴀʟនᴏ  \:  \:  \: </p><p>V = I × R _{ᴛ}

Now ( 1 ) becomes

I R  _{ᴛ}  = I R _{1}  +  I R _{2}  +I R  _{3}  \\  I R _{ᴛ} = I(R  _{1} +R  _{2}+R _{3} ) \\ ⇒R _{ᴛ}= R  _{1} +R _{2} +R _{3}
