The best answer I have is they don't have D orbital electrons like transition metals. They don't tend to share their S orbital electrons, because they are relatively easy to strip so they form positive ions. They bond to other atoms then by an ionic bond...

Alkali metals have low ionisation energy so they can easily form ionic compounds. Moreover, alkali metal ions have least charge density as they are bigger in size and they have no vacant lower energy orbitals. So they can not take electrons easily from the ligands due to lack of vacant lower energy orbitals . So they don't easily form complexes. As Li(I) has highest charge density it can form some complexes. Some complexes of Li(I) with chelating ligands can be isolated in solid state.
