The Rajya sabha is the “Upper House” of Parliament and is sometimes called the“House of Elders”.The Rajya Sabha is anindirectly elected House.The Constitution fixed the maximum number of membership of the Rajya Sabha at 250 (two hundred and fifty).Out of 250 members 12 are nominated by the President from amongst persons who have achieved distinction in Literature, Arts, Science and Social Service.The rest 238 members are to be elected by the State Legislative Assemblies of different States and Union Territories.The Constitution has fixed the number of elected representatives from each State.The actual strength of Rajya sabha at present is Two hundred and forty five(245), of which 233 are elected and 12 are nominated.

Rajya sabha has 250 members out of which 238 of them are elected by the states of the union and rest 12 are nominated by the president amongst men of repute in various spheres of life. The presiding officer of the rajya sabha is the VICE PRESIDENT of our country.
