Motivation is simply the driving force which drives one to achieve or reach goals.  It is a psychological process which initiates - guides - maintains goal-oriented behavior.

Explanation:

Motivation is the key to all human actions, right from quenching our thirst to becoming a scientist.

  • It is a personal internal feeling influenced by internal and external factors which drives a person to do something.
  • Motivation is based on need.
  • Motivation is planned and continuous process
  • Motivation can be positive or negative and is based on positive or negative reinforcements.
  • Motivation helps to improve efficacy, image, and human relations.
  • Motivation components – activation, persistence, and intensity
  • Motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic.

Many psychologists have proposed motivational theories like Maslow’s needs hierarchy, Herzberg’s two-factor theory, Alderfer’s ERG theory, Skinner’s reinforcement theory, Locke’s goal-setting theory etc.,  based on three main concepts – instincts, drives and needs, arousal levels .
