Plate tectonics theory was given in 1970s...according to it the crust of earth is nothing but several solid and rigid plates moving on the upper mantle (asthenosphere) driven by conventional current beneath.
While moving plates interact with each other which can be ocean-ocean plates ,ocean continent plates or continent continent plates interaction giving rise to boundaries formation.
It explains many of the continental and below oceanic features like mountains ,trenches,ridges etc.
