OVERLAPPING DIFFERENCES

1) When one kind of social divisions leads to an advantage or disadvantage, or "overlaps" with another, it is an overlapping social difference.

2) They are difficult to accodomate and can lead to violence, discrimination, etc.

3) Eg. In India the dalits are more likely to be poor and discriminated.

CROSS CUTTING

1) When two social differences are independent of each other, they are cross cutting differences.

2) They are easy to accommodate.

3) Eg. In Netherlands, both Catholics and Protestants are equally likely to be rich or poor.
