when an object falls freely from a height at the first it is in a potential energy and zero kinetic energy
then as it starts falling it has kinetic energy and the potential energy decrease
as it is JUST above a ground and almost touching the ground the kinetic energy is full and the potential energy is zero .
and when it touches the ground it has zero kinetic energy and full potential energy
the amount of mechanical energy is fixed but the form changes.
