Definite, indefinite and zero articles

Articles are important parts of speech. They are used as quantifiers, determiners and specifiers.

There are three types of articles-  definite, indefinite and zero articles.

Definite articles are those used to express specificity.

'The' is the only definite article to be used. It is used in front of a noun as a determiner.

It specifically determines the identity of a noun.

For example: The Indian Government is leaving no stones unturned to control the pandemic.

It is also used to specify the superlative degree of an adjective describing a noun.

For example: Ashoka was the greatest Indian king.

Indefinite articles are used before nouns or noun substitutes to indicate the generality of a noun.  It is not as specific as a definite article. It includes two articles-a and an.

For example: An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Zero articles are in contrast to the above articles that no words as articles are added before nouns.

For example: My lap dog's name is Shock.

This is a case of zero article when the Proper noun 'Shock' is not determined by any article.

But in the sentence,' I gave my mother a shock with my result.' the indefinite article 'a' is used in front of the common noun 'shock'.
