Writing in college is writing about ideas. It may be helpful to think about this kind of writing as conversation and relate it to previous experiences with reading and writing in and outside of school, as you did for your literacy narrative. Reading and writing in college requires critical habits of mind. Many students describe how they used to like to read and write, until they got to middle school or high school, so that know they are just completing a task – and even then they sometimes forget what they just read. Their eyes seem to keep moving, but they aren’t following the meaning. The problem may be that these students are reading for entertainment rather than reading to understand, reading critically – or listening critically.
