Q.131. Explain the causes of emergence of aggressive nationalism.

Ans. In the last decade of 19th century, the aggressive nationalism was encouraged by the following reasons:

1. Drought and Plague- During the last decade of 19th century, people of India had to face many natural calamities like drought and plague. British government was indifferent towards it. This enraged people and this resulted in the emergence of aggressive nationalism.

2. Partition of Bengal- In 1905, Lord Curzon divided Bengal following the policy of Divide and Rule.' This enraged the people and they forwarded to aggressive nationalism.

3. Effect of social and religious movement- The social and religious movements charged the people of India with self-confidence.'

4. Impact of foreign incidents- Revolutions of France and America encouraged Indian people. So they attempted to get freedom through struggles.

5. Economic Policy of British Government- Indian agriculture and industries suffered a major setback due to the economic exploitation policy of British Government. Their economic policy patronized the interests of capitalists. Thus, the economic exploitation policy of the British contributed highly to the development of aggressive nationalism. Therefore after the revolution of 1857 the British laid a network of telegraph, railways and postal services.

6. Attention to weaknesses of Indian feudatory and Kings- The revolution of 1857, threw light on the self indulgence, cowardice and confrontation among them. During the revolution, when the revolutionaries were waging their lives in the struglle at the same time, some Indian Kings and feudal chieftains were supporting the British.
