The crime committed by the ancient mariner was killing the Albatross with his crossbow for new reason . For this act his co - mariners gave him the punishment of hanging the dead Albatross around his neck .

The crime was done by ancient mariner by killing the kind bird albatross but he was said by his shipmates to do so..... And the punishment was given because after the death of albatross they faced alot of problem and hang the dead albatross around the neck of ancient mariner to remind him his sin.
