Human embryonic development, or human embryogenesis, is the development and formation of the human embryo. It is characterised by the processes of cell division and cellular differentiation of the embryo that occurs during the early stages of development.
The development of the Human embryo takes place inside the amniotic sac, this stage is distinguished by the formation of most internal organs and external body structures.
After the process of fertilization, the zygote is developed. It divides mitotically to form 2, 4, 8, and 16-celled stages. These cells are called blastomeres. Morula is an embryo with 8 to 16 blastomeres. The morula keeps on dividing mitotically and gets converted into blastocysts. The external layer of the blastocyst is known as the trophoblast and gets attached to the uterine wall.
The implantation begins in the 1st week and gets completed by 2nd week. The inward cell mass of the blastocyst develops as an embryo. Blastocyst differentiates to form embryonic and extraembryonic tissues. The implantation finishes in the 2nd week. The uterine cells and chronic villi of the trophoblast form the placenta, as a connection between the mother and the fetus.
Gastrulation onsets in the 3rd week, differentiating into ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. The heart is the very first organ that begins to work, it develops after 1 month of pregnancy. Limbs and digits take 2 months to develop. By the end of the 1st-trimester, all the major organ of the body develops. Genitals become visible. In the 5th month, hairs start to appear. By the end of 2nd trimester, eyelashes, and eyelids are formed. As the end of the 9th-month approaches, the fetus is completely developed.
