Sap is a fluid transported in xylem cells (vessel elements or tracheids) or phloem sieve tube elements of a plant. These cells transport water and nutrients throughout the plant.

elaborated sap : The sap of a plant produced in its leaves from the crude sap to feed the plant.

made up of : The plant gets water and mineral salts from the soil. This is inorganic matter. This inorganic matter is changed by light and carbon and becomes elaborated sap.

raw sap : The plant takes up food from the soil through its roots. It takes water and mineral salts from the soil (see Booklet No. 1, page 17). But it has to change the water and mineral salts.

made up of : Plants take water and mineral salts from the soil through their roots. The mixture of these substances is called raw sap.
