Answer: A function generator  is a device used to generate different types of periodic signal waveforms over a range of frequencies.

Characteristics of a function generator :

1. Can produce waveforms of any shape.

2. Can generate a wide range of frequencies.

3. Can be phase locked to an external signal source, which may be a frequency reference or another function generator.

An oscillator is a device used to produce a periodic signal waveform usually, sine or a square wave.

Characteristics of an oscillator :

1. Can produce stable periodic signal of only one waveform for a given design/circuit.

2. Can generate a particular stable frequency as an output.

So, a FG is made of many oscillators and they both does the same thing, i.e to give an output periodic signal.

The difference is that a single (one circuit of) FG can produce many different waveforms while an oscillator can produce only one waveform. Also, in any real application we mostly use oscillators used in the development, test and repair of electronic equipment.
