In agriculture, ‘earth’ usually means the same thing; but in geology, ‘earth’ may include solid rock, and therefore has (1) a different composition than a mixture or eroded rock and plant byproducts, (2) a far greater stiffness or tensile strength, and (3) (usually) a greater density, since biological materials are typically of lower density than rocks, and rocks don’t usually contain voids filled with air or liquids.
