explain the differences between an element and a compound.give examples.

A compound contains atoms of different elements chemically combined together in a fixed ratio whereas an element is a pure chemical substance made of same type of atom.Compounds contain different elements in a fixed ratio arranged in a defined manner through chemical bonds.

Examples of elements:  oxygen, hydrogen, sodium, chlorine, lead, iron.
Examples of compounds: water ( or hydrogen oxide ) H2O; and Sodium Chloride.
