1) in hilly areas:-

a)Ploughing along th econtour lines can slow down the flow of water down the slopes. This is called contour ploughing.

b)Steps can be cut on the slopes making terraces.Terrace cultivation restricts erosion. Western and central Himalayas have well developed terrace farming.

2)IN AGRICULTURAL REGIONS:-Large fields can be divided into strips.Strips of grass are left to grow between crops. This breaks up the force of winds. This is called strip cropping.

3)IN DRY AREAS:-Planting lines of trees to create shelter also works in a similar way.Rows of such trees are called shelter belts. These shelter belts have contributed significantly to the stabilisation of sand dunes and in stabilising the desert in western India.

4)IN INDUSTRIAL AND SUBURBAN AREAS:-Proper management of waste lands, control of mining activities, proper discharge and disposal of industrial effluents and wastes after treatment can reduce land and water degradation.

Hope it helps....

(i) Contour farming:
Contour farming may be defined as ploughing, seeding, cultivating and harvesting across the slope, rather than with it.

(ii) Strip cropping:
On land with a dissected slope, planting crops on contour strips will be an effective erosion deterrent.

(iii) Terracing:
The modern terrace is an embankment of earth constructed across a slope in such a way as to control water run-off and minimise erosion.

(iv) Shelter belts:
These are the ‘green belts’ of trees which help to break the force of strong winds and thus prevent or cut to a minimum the blowing away of the loose topsoil. In areas where wind erosion is more, rows of trees may be helpful to check the flow of winds.
