Asexual reproduction takes place by 6 different methods. They are:

  1. Fission
  2. Budding
  3. Spore formation
  4. Regeneration
  5. Fragmentation and
  6. Vegetative propagation

1) Fission:- Single celled organisms split into two equal offsprings or more offsprings.

Ex:- Paramecium, bacteria.

2) Budding:- A growth on the body as a but gross to form identical copy of parent.

Ex:- Yeast.

3) Spore formation:- Spores I are produced in sporangium.

Ex:- Rhizopus, mucor, bacteria, ferns and mosses.

4) Regeneration:-

a) Ability of organisms to give rise to new individual organisms from their body parts.

b) That is if the individual is somehow cut or broken up into many pieces, many of these pieces grow into separate individuals.

Ex:- Hydra and planaria.

5) Fragmentation:-

a) Some of the organisms can grow from a single piece of the parent organism.

b) These pieces of fragments grow into new individuals.

Ex:- Flatworms, Spirogyra, moulds, lichens.

6) Parthenogenesis:- In the process generally the female gametes or over develop into zygote without fertilization.

Ex:- Bees, ants and wasps.

7) Vegetative propagation:- When a vegetative part like stem, root and leaves can produce a new organism it is called vegetative propagation. It is of two types.

a) Natural propagation:-

i) Stem:

Eg:

  • Stolon - Vallisnernia, Strawberry
  • Bulbs - Onion
  • Corms - Colocasia
  • Tuber - Potato

ii) Leaf

  • Root - Dahlia, Carrot, Radish

b) Artificial propagation:

i) Layering: Eg: Nerium ,Guava, Orange ,Rose

ii) Cutting:Eg: Rose, Hibiscus ,Sugarcane

iii) Grafting:Eg: Sapota, Guava ,Mango,etc.
