Harappans used different strategies to procure raw materials for their production purpose
Explanation:
- The Harappans procured supplies in different ways for the making and production purposes. For example, they founded settlements in areas where shell was available, such as Balakot & Nageshwar .
- Other sites were Shortughai, in distant Afghanistan, close to the finest source of lapis lazuli, a relatively highly prized blue stone, & Lothal that was near sources of carnelian (Bharuch in Gujarat), steatite (south Rajasthan & north Gujarat) and metal (from Rajasthan).
- Another raw material procurement strategy could have been to send expeditions to places like the Khetri region of Rajasthan (copper) and South India (gold). These expeditions had established "communication with local communities".
- In these areas, occasional findings of Harappan artefacts like steatite micro beads are indicators of such communication.
- In the Khetri region there is proof of what archaeologists call the culture of Ganeshwar-Jodhpura, with its unique "non-Harappan pottery" & an extraordinary "abundance" of "copper artefacts". It's likely this region's inhabitants supplied the Harappans with copper.
