Types of Marriages in Ancient India:

1. In the ancient days, there was a belief that Kanyadana or the gift of a daughter in marriage was an important religious duty of the father.

2. There are various types of marriages prevailed in the ancient times.

3. According to the Dharmasutras and Dharmashastras there are as many as eight forms of marriage.

  • Endogamy: It refers to marriage within a unit that is a kin group,caste or a group living in the same locality.
  • Exogamy: It refers to marriage outside the unit. That is marrying into families outside the kin.
  • Polygyny: It is the practice of a man having several wives.
  • Polyandry: It is the practice of a woman having several husbands.
