The third and final act of German unification was the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, orchestrated by Bismarck to draw the western German states into alliance with the North German Confederation. With the French defeat, the German Empire was proclaimed in January 1871 in the Palace at Versailles, France.

Disintegration and unification of Germany:
- The Unification of Germany into a German Empire with tight political and organizational integration has substituted the regionalized German Confederation and Holy Roman Empire.
- The German Confederation ended as a consequence of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 between the integral Confederation individuals of the Austrian Empire and its associates on one side and the Kingdom of Prussia and its associates on the other.
