Distribution of the legislative powers in between the Centre and the State is an important feature of the Federal Constitution so that there is a division of authority in between the States and the Centre.
The Indian Constitution has distributed the legislative powers in between the States and the Union: (i) Territorial Jurisdiction (ii) Distribution of Legislative powers.
The Article 246 of Indian Constitution gives a 3-fold distribution of legislative powers: The Union List, The State list, and the Concurrent list.
The Union List gives legislative power to the Centre on 99 items in India including the foreign affairs, defence, coinage and currency etc.
The State list gives exclusive legislative powers to the State on 61 items that are mainly of local interest.
The concurrent list gives power to both the States and the Union on 52 items that include the education, civil, and Criminal procedure code, bankruptcy and insolvency, marriage and divorce etc.
