Northern Himalayas are divided into 4 parts in North-South direction based on the structure and relief. They are (i) Tibetan / Tethys / Trans Himalayas, (ii) Central / Greater Himalayas or Himadri Ranges, (iii) Lesser Himalayas or Himachal Ranges and (iv) Outer / Sub Himalayas or
Siwalik Ranges.
Importance:-
Forms as the natural barrier to the Sub-continent. Source for many perennial rivers such as Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra.

I) on basis of altitude
ii) on the basis of region
Thus on basis of altitude there are three divisions
a) Himadri ( great mountain or the outermost)
b) Himachal ( middle himalaya)
c) shiwaliks ( innermost himalya)
Now on basis of region
I) kashmir himalaya
2) kumaon
3) nepal
4) assam
