The French society was divided into three estates before the French Revolution:

The upper/first estate which consisted of noble men and the royal family.

The middle/second estate which consisted of the clergymen.

The lower/third estate which consisted of the common people.

The first two estates were exempted from paying the taxes and their taxes had to be paid by the members of the lower estate.

Hope the answer helps.
