In geomorphology, drainage systems, also known as river systems, are thepatterns formed by the streams, rivers, and lakes in a particular drainagebasin. They are governed by the topography of the land, whether a particular region is dominated by hard or soft rocks, and the gradient of the land.

The Dendritic pattern develops where the river channel follows the slope of the terrain. The stream with its tributaries resembles the branch of a tree , thus the name Dendritic. A river joined by its tributaries , at approx right angles , devlops a Trellis pattern. A Trellis drainage pattern develops where hard and soft rocks exist parallel to each other. A rectangular drainage pattern develops on a strongly joined rocky terrain.
