hydrogen has dual nature due to the fact it only has a single electron in it's outer shell. This means that a hydrogen atom can easily gain an electron to create a full outer shell like typical halogen,or loose an electron, like an alkali metal
Hydrogen can also be diatomic making it unreactive as it already has 2 electron in its outer electron
