Answer: The economic condition of peasants and artists was far much better during pre-British rule. Due to lack of communication and transportation, the Indian market was too small. The village community was grouped into labours which were hereditary.
Barter systems followed during pre-British rule. The raw materials produced by the peasants and artisans was consumed by the people in village itself.
During the British rule, the peasants and artisans were most affected and the landlords were mostly beneficial. They were made to pay the revenue for their agricultural land and yet they were forced to borrow and were unable to payback the debt.
