Catalysts provide a new reaction pathway in which a lower A.E. is offered.

A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy so that more reactant molecules collide with enough energy to surmount the smaller energy barrier.

Depending on the type it will either lower or raise the activation energy, food preservatives are a catalyst that raise the energy to such a point where food does not go bad, but most lower the activation energy by providing a different pathway for the reaction to occur
