CuCl₂ is an ionic compound. Thus it is electrolysed in the molten state.
Anode - Carbon electrodes
Cathode - Carbon electrode
Electrolyte - fused copper chloride.
Cathode reaction - Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ ==> Cu(reddish brown deposit of copper at the anode)
Anode reaction = 2Cl⁻ - 2e⁻ ==> Cl₂ (greenish yellow chlorine gas is obtained)
