An electromagnetic method of separation is the process of separating ore of metals from the gangue particles depending on the difference in the magnetic properties of the two minerals.

In this method one of the minerals is magnetic, and the other is nonmagnetic.

Steps -

  • A thin layer of a finely ground ore is spread or passed over the magnetic roller.
  • The magnetic ore particles will attract to the magnetic roller which is in the form of the pulley.
  • The gangue particles which are non-magnetic will fall into the heap made and will separate.

Example -

  • Fe (CrO_2)_2 (Chromite) is a magnetic ore.
  • It is separated from the non-magnetic gangue of silica.
