the major social groups are formed by sinhala speakers(74%) and tamil spesjers(18%)

within tamil speakers , 13% of that 18 % are sri lankan tamils while other 5% are indian tamils whose ancestors migrated to sri lanka as plantation workers.

most of the sinhala speakers are buddhist, tamil speakers are hindus or muslims & christians may be sny of them sinhala speaking or tamil speaking.
