Under British rule -> Tamil politicians enjoy power parity with Sinhala i.e. 50% of the power. This is entirely due to divide-and-rule orchestrations of the British.Post independence
Tamil political power dwindles down to 12% representing the Tamil population. The Tamil political power has undergone a correction to its natural position.
The conflict begins when the Tamil leadership attempts to augment the power deficit in a democracy.

They try to reduce Sinhala representation down to 50% to regain power-parity. Although Sinhala people are 75% of the population pie. This was known as 50:50 policy.
