If we take the cycle to start from the first day of a month, then firstly, one of the 2 ovaries produce an ovum. The walls of the uterus becomes thick and cushionary to recieve a egg even before the egg is released. This take 6 to 7 days. If, the egg is fertilized it reaches the uterus and stick to it's wall.

And if, fertilization doesn't occur within 2 to 3 days, the egg begins to crack. This is the mid of menstrual period. After a few days, the walls of the uterus along with the egg sheds of and came out of uterus in form of blood. The bleeding stays for 6 to 7 days, after which the second ovary produces an ovum.
