“Blood y Sunday” refers to to the incident which took place before the 1905 Revolution in Russia. A series of violent attacks took place on this Sunday. It was ordered by the Czarist regime in the then Russia to fire on unarmed civilians. The incident caused a number of deaths and triggered the Russian revolution of 1905.

When about 600 people started a planned march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on Sunday March 7, 1965, it was called a demonstration. When state troopers met the demonstrators at the edge of the city by the Edmund Pettus Bridge, that day became known as "Blood y Sunday."

The beginning of the 1905 Revolution in Russia started with Blood y Sunday, which took place on January 22nd. Those who marched in Blood y Sunday had the intention to present a loyal petition to the Tsar; begging him to use his royal authority to relieve their desperate conditions.
