Paris , a Trojan prince , absconds with Helen , the queen of Sparta and wife of Menelaus . She is welcomed despite , the beautiful , Cassandra , Paris’ sister’s warnings , who while gifted with prophecy has been cursed by Apollo to never be believed for spurning his advances . Helen’s previous suitors rally cuz they made a vow to attack any man who should try to steal Helen from her chosen husband. Menelaus seeks his brother , Agamemnon’s , assistance , in retrieving his wife and war on the Trojans , the king of Argos , who has wanted to attack Troy for her riches for sometime and now has an excuse . When the winds fail , preventing his leave , he sacrifices his young daughter , Iphigenia , appeasing the goddess , Artemis , and angering his wife , Clytemnestra , Helen’s sister , who had been told by him that he was going to marry her to Achilles . Troy prepares its defense , their best warrior being , Hector , noble and valiant , Crown Prince .

Heeding a prophecy stating that if Troilus , should reach the age of 20 Troy will not fall the Greeks ambush and kill the young prince . Agamemnon angers Achilles , Peleus , the King of the Myrmidons and Thetis’ , his wife , a sea goddess , son and the greatest of the Greek warriors , after he takes one of his captives , Briseis , for compensation for the loss of his own captive , which is the main focus of the Iliad . Note : Agamenon’s house has been long cursed ever since his ancestor served at a banquet for the gods his own mutilated and dismembered son as a meal . Achilles , as a child , was dipped in the River Styx , by his mother , making him invulnerable in everywhere but his heel and quite arrogant .

The war continues on for 10 years . Hera tries to manipulate her husband , Zeus , into dooming Troy , out of spite against Paris . Athena takes the side of the Greeks as well . Paris proves a coward fleeing from his duel with Menelaus , which would have ended the war Achilles retracts himself from the battle and the Greeks suffer on the field . Cassandra’s warnings are continuously ignored racking her with grief and causing her family to confine her deeming her mad . Achilles returns when his lover and friend , Patroclus , is killed , while disguised as Achilles , refusing Achilles’ command to keep out of the war , by Hector and he swears revenge . Briseis is eventually returned .

Hector has a heartfelt farewell with his wife and infant son . Odysseus , king of Ithaca , devises a plan to build a wooden horse and leave it on the city’s shores but hiding themselves inside . Helen guess the plot but her attempt to reveal it fails and Cassandra , to increase her despair , is too disbelieved . She attempts to burn the horse but is held back . Troy is sacked . Achilles manages to take his vengeance and kill Hector and despite his final pleas , desecrates his body , dragging it through the streets of Troy to the disgust of both the Greeks and Trojans . He relents after a plea from Priam , Hector’s father and the King of Troy , and being forced to do so by the gods , who were both disappointed and angered by Hector’s body not being returned to his family and who send Hermes , the messenger of the gods , to have Thetis , reason with/order her son to heed their commands . Achilles is eventually shot by an arrow in the heel by Paris , which was previously predicted by his mother , who told him joining the fight would mean for him , a short but eventful life , who later dies by the hands of Philoctetes , a Greek prince , after his 1st wife , who he spurned for Helen , refuses to heal him .

King Priam is slain and Hecuba is taken hostage. Hector’s infant son is throw from a roof in front of his grieving mother , who is taken as a sexual slave . Aeneas , a minor Trojan prince and Aphrodite’s , the goddess of love , favourite son , attempts escape with his young son , while carrying on his back , his elderly father and his wife , Creusa , Cassandra’s sister , but Creusa disappears not being able to keep up . He returns to search for her but instead is visited by her ghost , telling him to take care of their child . He tries to grasp her but she vanishes . She predicts his travels which first takes him to Carthage , ruled by the queen Dido/Elissa , who welcomes Aeneas and his party , listens keenly with sympathy to his story and offers him refuge within her castle and who falls in love with him . Cassandra seeks refuge in the temple of the wisdom goddess , Athena , but is savagely raped inside by Ajax the Lesser , one of the Greeks . Athena , angered , wants him punished and Odysseus wishes him stoned but he proclaims his innocence under oath . Agamemnon then takes Cassandra forcibly as a concubine and she has twin sons by him . He returns to Argos with her and their children.
