In essence India detached from Africa and Madagascar. It rode eastward and northward on the plate rotating slightly before encountering the subduction zone along the edge of the Asian plate. It rode over the zone colliding with Asia and forcing the Himalaya upward. The process occurred following the break up of the Gondwanaland supercontinent. Observations in Asia and India suggest that the intitial breakup detached Madagascar, India and a third fragment. The third piece moved in advance of India “softly” colliding with Asia. India detached from Madagascar and followed, making a “hard” contact with Asia and the preceding mass. Wikipedia provides a decent summary.
