The peninsular plateau is a tableland that holds igneous and metamorphic rocks. It was formed from the drifted part of the Gondwana land and it contains the oldest rocks. Broad and shallow valleys and rounded hills are the main features of the peninsular plateau. This plateau can be broadly divided into two regions- the Central highlands and the Deccan plateau. One of the prominent features of this plateau is the black soil area that is known as the Deccan trap. This black soil was formed when there was volcanic eruption. That is the reason it has igneous rocks.
