The metals lying in the middle of the reactivity series are moderately reactive and usually occur as sulphide or carbonates in nature therefore extraction of these metals is also carried out in two steps :

1) conversion of ore into metal oxide --

since , the reduction of oxide easier in comparison to sulphide ore carbonate ores, sulphide and carbonate must be converted into metal oxide Prior to reduction. This is done by roasting of sulphide ores and calcination of carbonate ores .

2) reduction of metal oxide to metal--

the reduction of these metal oxides is carried out by using some suitable reducing agents .These cannot be reduced by heating alone.
