The factors that are responsible for the depletion of the water table are as follows :

  1. Construction of residential areas - the cementing of all the open lands has led to the washing away of rainwater that would otherwise have been absorbed by the soil and would have led to an increase in the water table levels.
  2. Population increase - the increasing population of India has high demands for water. Digging deeper wells has allowed us to meet their demands but has also led to an overall decrease in underground water.
  3. Lack of water conservation - there have been few attempts to conserve rainwater, which is the only source of replenishment for the underground water tables.
