Distribution of plants and animals on the earth is determined mainly by climate. However the other factors are soil, relief and drainage, though most of them are also interrelated.

- Land: The fertile level is generally devoted to agriculture. The undulating and rough terrains are areas where grasslands and woodlands develop.
- Soil: The soils also vary over space. The sandy soils of the desert support cactus and thorny bushes while wet, marshy, deltaic soils support mangroves and deltaic vegetation.
