Answer:
The Indian constitution bestows a federal structure on India. India is a union of states and union territories. The entire country has been divided into constituencies for the convenience of conducting elections and also to ensure that all the regions, states and union territories find representation in running the national government according to their population.
The national government at the centre is formed by representatives elected by the people of India in national elections. The states and union territories have their own legislatures to which comprises of elected representatives of the state or union territory. The national government is headed by the Prime Minister and state governments are headed by Chief Ministers.
The legislation for the union as well as the sate are formulated by members of the union or state legislatures who are elected. The Prime Minister heads the national executive and the Chief Ministers head the state executives. But supervisory control over them is exercised by the President of India at the national level; the Governors at state levels, and Lt Governors in Union Territories. This gives each state and union territory to elect a government of their own choice but the President keeps a check on their activities through Governors and Lt Governors appointed by him in consultation with the Prime Minister of the day.
All activities of the union and state governments and other disputes are settled by courts at various levels. Beginning with district level courts that work under the High Court of the State, the ultimate arbitrator in all matters is the Supreme Court of India which is a national body headed by the Chief Justice of India.
The legislature, the executive and the judiciary are independent of each other and all of them draw their powers from the Indian Constitution.
In spite of the governments of the day to muscle and silence the fourth estate from time to time, India still has a robust media which acts as a watchdog of the nation.
There are very few nations that have a constitution which ensures such independence to state administration and at the same time work as part of the union in national interest.
That is the beauty of the Indian Federal Structure enunciated by the framers of the Indian Constitution.
