The features which affect the distribution of population are :
(a) Relief: Mountains and plateaus are sparsely populated, due to rugged terrain and infertile soil.
(b) Plains. Plains are densely populated because of fertile soil.
(c) Climate : Very hot and very cold, very wet and very dry regions are sparsely populated, due to unfavourable climatic conditions, e. g., Rajasthan very hot and very dry and Ladakh-very cold are sparsely populated. :
(d) Occupation : Primary, secondary and tertiary regions which provide more secondary occupations due to .. industrial development are densely populated, e.g
Maharashtra, West Bengal, etc.
(e) Transport facilities: Better transport facilities in regions like Northern plains attract more people whereas mountain areas have inadequate transport facilities, hence are sparsely populated, e.g., Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram are sparsely populated:
